Metal plating craft is a technique to form other metal coatings on the surface of metal materials, mainly to improve corrosion resistance, decorative properties, and electrical conductivity. The following are the main processes
Pretreatment
Degreasing: This process removes oil and grease from the metal material surface, usually using an alkaline degreasing solution, which may be combined with ultrasonic cleaning or other methods.
Pickling: Pickling is performed using an acid solution (e.g., hydrochloric acid, sulfuric acid, etc.) to remove oxide film and rust on the metal surface. This improves the adhesion of the plating.
Polishing: Polishing treatment is performed to reduce surface roughness and to bring out luster. Mechanical polishing, chemical polishing, and electrolytic polishing are available.Plating Process
Electrolytic plating: The plated object and an anode containing the plating metal are immersed in a plating solution, and through direct current, plating metal ions are reduced to the surface of the plated object to form a metal film. For example, nickel plating, chrome plating, and copper plating are performed by this method.
Electroless plating: Without an external current supply, plating metal ions are reduced by a reducing agent in the plating solution to form a film. Often used for nickel plating and silver plating.Post-treatment
Rinsing: After plating, the plated object is rinsed to remove residual plating solution and impurities from the surface.
Drying: Drying the plated object after rinsing. Normally, warm-air drying or hot-air circulating drying is used.
Anti-rust treatment: To further enhance corrosion resistance, rust-preventive treatments such as chromate treatment or conversion treatment may be applied.
Inspection: The thickness, adhesion, appearance, and hardness of the plating film are inspected to confirm quality.
